Grunn is a former sea-captain who is in charge of raising orphans in the Margate District and is also a member of Troika.
Appearance[]
Grunn resembles a large-muscular humanoid shark, among the first aquatic-based Dreamkeepers to be seen, having mostly dark magenta-colored skin and two large red marks (possibly resembling gills) and oddly enough still having a small fluffy tail. He wears a large gray tanktop, striped pants and large black boots.
Personality[]
Grunn is very rough and aggressive, among other things. In his youth he was known to use his abnormal size to bully and get things done, which he continues to utilize on the various orphans he's tasked himself to raising if not just to have free-child labor.
He has a rather short temper, and is not above beating children like Mace whenever he does something major to upset him. In fact he will not hesitate to deplore any kind of harsh punishment, such as beatings, depravity of food or tying kids to his ship's mast all night. Grunn's incompatibility extends to the point where when given a gun, he would joke about possibly shooting random kids as a service to the city's overpopulation problem.
Grunn is a heavy drinker, often drinking Fermentae (his favorite being Scinter's Mark) and lounging around reading his collection of porn. While on a hangover he can be so out of it his language becomes very slurred and seemingly forgets what he was doing, even if it is important. When sober he can display some level of seriousness regarding the Nightmare and Dark Dreamkeepers, as seen shortly after the murder of Paige.
History[]
Past[]
In his youth, Grunn was a sea-captain who liked to explore the wide-open ocean and took part in selling his wares. At some point he would get married, later divorced and then convert his ship into an orphanage in the Margate District. While unknown as to when he would come to know Igrath and Scinter he would eventually become a member of Troika.
As part of his membership, his orphanage would also double as a Troika safe house in order to keep his ties to them secret; as such his orphanage was placed on a black list that would prevent him from being evicted for any negligence he may cause. Among the many orphans that would occupy his orphanage, he would be put in charge of taking care of Mace and Whip when they were just infants.
Prelude[]
Volume 1[]
Chapter 1[]
One day, when Mace tries to pull a prank on Randy using some scented coins, Grunn comes barging into the mess hall looking for the coins. As Randy proceeds to tattle on Mace while the other orphans agreed, Grunn picks up the coins with a balled-up fist. Suddenly, a male slob appears, sexually entranced by the pheromone-coated coins in Grunn's hand. The slob jumps on Grunn, attempting to mate with him. In a rage, Grunn punches the slob away, causing it to fall through the floor of the mess hall to the ocean below. Grunn then grabs Mace and slugs him in the face, then shoves Paige away when she tries to help Mace. After giving Mace and Whip a grueling punishment for the prank, he throws them out of the mess hall.
Later that day, Grunn calls Mace and Whip up from the dock beams to run a fermentae errand for him. As he threatened that Paige would take over on their punishment if they weren't back in time, he shortened their time limit when they didn't leave quickly enough.
Chapter 2[]
The next morning, Grunn awoke from sleeping on the beach when a nearby siren goes off. Ordering the orphans in the water to bring in their catches, he orders those with school to get going. As he watches Mace and Whip happily leave the orphanage, he curses the government over the idea of possibly being forced to pay for their transport.
Chapter 3[]
The next day, in Igrath's home in the Kojiki District, Grunn reassures Igrath that Mace and Whip weren't at the orphanage. Moments later, Grunn expresses joy when Scinter arrives with Mace and Whip in tow. As Mace wakes up, Grunn kneels down and asked Mace to explain what happened the previous night. As he did, Grunn tells Igrath they needed to talk. At that moment, Lilith and Namah appeared, both badly wounded. After Namah explained how they were injured, Grunn insisted that they talk, but Igrath exclaimed that he was helping his nieces first.
Volume 2[]
Chapter 4[]
Early the next morning, Grunn, Igrath and Scinter talk about what they should do with the kids. After Igrath invited Mace into the room, who was eavesdropping outside the door, Grunn gives Mace a bitter insult. As Igrath prepares to explain the Nightmare legend to Mace, a Mokoi suddenly appears at the window. Grunn freaks out and covers his eyes while his comrades did the same.
Later, Grunn leans against the wall with a pot on his head as a helmet and a pistol in his hand. As they confirmed the Mokoi was gone, they see and hear the approach of the City Guard. Looking out the window with his gun, Grunn had the inkling of taking some shots at some nearby kids, then jumped back as the City Guard fired at him.
Chapter 5[]
Later that day, Grunn sat on a flight of stairs as he insulted the City Guard for being so cowardly. He then yelled at Scinter who ordered him to leave the house so the orphanage wouldn't be compromised. Igrath then tries to have Grunn walk out on his hands with his pants down, but Grunn threw a fit at the joke. Igrath took Grunn down to the telepad in the basement and teleported him away.
Volume 3[]
Chapter 7[]
The next day, Grunn sleeps in his office at the orphanage as Mace, Whip and Bast barge in. After they manage to enter the holds of the ship to find Kalei tied to a support beam, Grunn wakes up and finds them. Bast attempts to stun Grunn by busting a two-by-four into his crotch, but Grunn shakes it off and grabs at the boys.
Chapter 8[]
After tying Mace and Bast to the support beam, Grunn takes Kalei down a mysterious hatch in the floor.
Chapter 9[]
Later that evening, as Viriathus and Nainso gave Bill, Damon and Woods a tour of the Troika base, Grunn appears on a telepad with Kalei on a rope. Grunn gets sad when Vi cuts the rope with a knife while taking Kalei away. As Igrath orders Grunn to retrieve some coins, Nainso joins Grunn on a telepad as they teleport to the orphanage. Minutes later, they return with Grunn showing despair and Nainso showing disappointment. Grunn attempts to clumsily explain, but Scinter tells Grunn that he had no good excuse for his face. Grunn then goes on to accuse the orphans of taking the coins from him, then argues with Igrath over their safekeeping.
Volume 4[]
Chapter 11[]
The next day, Grunn joins the other Troika members in a meeting regarding Operation Guillotine. He speaks up to tell the crew that the missing Guidecoins were not his fault. Moments later, Kalei flies out of the med station with a burst of energy. As she normalizes, Grunn looks in astonishment as Igrath and Scinter initiate the operation.
Chapter 12[]
Later that night, Grunn sits in a chair sleeping as Nainso and Tia look at him, contemplating a return trip to Logos.
